The Last Blockbuster: Bend, Oregon’s Other National Treasure

Published on June 1, 2024

Stepping into The Last Blockbuster is like stepping back into the late 90s and early 2000s, an era when frosted tips were cool, and renting movies was a weekend ritual. The familiar blue and yellow sign greets you, and the unmistakable scent of popcorn fills the air. Rows upon rows of DVDs and Blu-rays line the shelves, each one a reminder of a time when selecting a movie was an event in itself. This store isn’t just about movies; it’s about memories, community, and a simpler time when browsing the aisles was part of the fun.

The Last of Its Kind

The Last Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon, is more than just a store; it’s a landmark. In a world where video rental stores have all but disappeared, this Blockbuster has managed to survive and recently it has thrived. The store is a family-owned affair and continues to be owned and operated by the original franchisees. According to their website “In 2010, Blockbuster Corporate filed for bankruptcy. The once giant video store chain had fallen from over 9094 stores in 2004 to a mere 1700 struggling corporate locations. By April 2011 they were being auctioned off and the winning bid of 320 million dollars went to Dish Network, a satellite TV provider. Slowly the new operators began closing corporate owned stores and in January 2014 the final Blockbuster Corporate location closed. This left only a few franchise locations around the world and at the end of March 2019 only 1 store remained, our store in Bend Oregon.” Today, it stands as a symbol of the past and a testament to the enduring appeal of physical media.
