Floating the Deschutes is one of Bend’s defining summer traditions. On warm afternoons, the river becomes a moving gathering space filled with tubes, paddleboards, kayaks, and groups drifting through the center of town.
The most popular float route runs directly through Bend’s river corridor and is especially active from late June through early September. Local shuttle services and tube rental companies make the process relatively simple for visitors, even if it’s their first time on the river.
Timing matters. Midday weekends tend to bring the largest crowds, while mornings and weekday floats often feel more relaxed and scenic. Visitors hoping for a quieter experience may prefer launching earlier in the day or planning around peak weekend traffic.
Sunscreen, water shoes, and secure storage for valuables are strongly recommended, as river entry points and shallow rocky areas can vary throughout the route. Visitors should also expect cold water—even during peak summer heat—as the Deschutes remains snow-fed year-round.
Part of what makes floating the river so memorable is how closely it connects the outdoors with the city itself. Breweries, parks, walking paths, and downtown Bend all sit within reach of the river corridor, making a float feel less like an isolated activity and more like part of the rhythm of summer in Bend.
For many visitors, a day on the Deschutes becomes less about the destination and more about settling into the pace of the river itself.
