Central Oregon’s high desert environment creates conditions that make stargazing surprisingly spectacular. Dry air, wide-open landscapes, and lower light pollution outside Bend combine to create exceptionally clear night skies throughout much of the year.
Even within Bend, visitors can often see far more stars than they would in larger urban areas. Along the Deschutes River or in quieter parts of town, clear summer nights reveal striking views of the Milky Way and major constellations overhead.
For even darker skies, short drives outside the city open up expansive stargazing opportunities. Areas east of Bend and higher elevation viewpoints throughout Central Oregon offer some of the clearest nighttime visibility in the Pacific Northwest.
Summer and early fall tend to provide the most comfortable viewing conditions, though winter skies can be remarkably crisp on clear evenings. On especially dark nights, meteor showers and planetary visibility become part of the experience as well.
